How to Make Whole Wheat Pita Bread


This whole wheat pita bread also called Arabic bread is ideal for all kinds of sandwiches. If you have a meeting with friends, a barbecue, a simple family meal or something delicious for snack or breakfast always comes in handy.

This type of crumbless bread that you can eat as it is or toast it. Also, you can combine with infinities of fillings. It really is an exquisite bread, one of my favorites because it is super light, rich, and simple to make.

Ideal to prepare a good quantity and freeze. In this way, you can always have it at hand when you need it.

Whole Wheat Arabic Bread Recipe

  • Whole wheat flour 500 g / 17.64 oz / 4 ¼ cup
  • Water 450 ml / 15.87 oz / 2 cup
  • Olive oil 50 ml / 3 ½ tbsp
  • Dry yeast 8 g / 0.28 oz / 1 ½ tsp
  • Salt 10 g / 0.35 oz / 2 tsp


  1. In a bowl place the flour, salt, yeast, olive oil, and water. Form a uniform dough. Cover and let rest for an hour.
  2. Make small dough balls of approximately 60-80 gramos (2.12-2.82 oz) each. This will depend on the size of pita bread you want. Cover and let rest for 10-15 minutes.
  3. Crush the dough ball with your fingers and stretch with a rolling pin giving the dough a round and thin shape. Place in a baking dish.
  4. Bake in a strong oven for 5-7 minutes. Or until you notice that the bread is inflated. Do not toast too much or it will be hard and crunchy and that is not the idea of this kind of bread.
